Vehicle Development at FH Dortmund
The Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Vehicle Development at FH Dortmund provides students with comprehensive engineering knowledge related to the development of modern vehicles. The program addresses current developments in vehicle technology, including electromobility, autonomous driving systems, alternative fuels and connected vehicles.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical and project-oriented learning. Students can develop their individual interests through compulsory and elective modules in the areas of Vehicle Electronics and Vehicle Technology.
Program Structure
The program has a standard period of study of seven semesters.
During the first three semesters, students acquire fundamental engineering knowledge. The foundation studies include mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering design, strength of materials, electrical engineering, vehicle electronics, fluid mechanics, sustainability and ethics.
In the fourth and fifth semesters, students continue with further foundation subjects and choose individual compulsory and elective modules.
Vehicle Electronics
The Vehicle Electronics specialisation focuses on the electronic systems used in vehicles and electromobility. Subjects include controller and processor technology, software engineering, vehicle electrical systems and power semiconductors.
Vehicle Technology
The Vehicle Technology specialization focuses on the conception and development of vehicles and the integration of systems into vehicles. Subjects include vehicle elements and construction, vehicle dynamics, energy and resources in vehicle development and manufacturing technology.
Practical Semester
The sixth semester is a 20-week practical semester. Students gain experience in professional engineering activities through specific tasks and subject-related work.
The practical semester can be completed in companies in the vehicle industry or in other companies and institutions relevant to the study objective. Students can also spend the practical semester abroad at one of FH Dortmund’s partner universities, including opportunities in countries such as India, Peru, the USA and France.
Final Semester
In the seventh semester, students complete an independent engineering project either in FH Dortmund’s laboratories or at a company. The project can also serve as preparation for the Bachelor’s thesis, which is completed during the final semester.
Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree.
